Parents love to throw their little girl a big first birthday party. Turning one is a big deal and an opportunity for the family and friends to get together and celebrate their baby girl’s first year. It’s often planned months in advance with parents meticulously organising themes, activities, attractions, lolly bags and decorations. Here are some current trends and ideas for birthday party themes for girls to help you plan your big day! Stay tuned for our boys party theme blog coming next week!

Unicorns are trending at the moment and big in the world of kid’s parties. There are so many fun things you can do for a unicorn themed party including; Unicorn cakes, cake pops, cupcakes, unicorn piñatas, unicorn balloons and matching coloured streamers or balloon arches. Welcome your guests with a blackboard sign saying “Unicorns are welcome”. Think colour, magic and fun!

Lolly bags: Unicorn wands are a good idea for Lolly bags along with cottoned candy and matching coloured or unicorn themed lollies.

Location: Anywhere, indoors, outdoors! This theme works anywhere.

Activities: Make some glittery unicorn slime!

Wow Factor: For something a little bit special you could hire your very own unicorn (a horse in disguise but don’t tell the little ones!)

Rustic floral/feminine woodlands themes are huge at the moment. The look includes flowers, floral letters, rustic looking cake with matching flowers, lots of greenery, wreaths and the use of natural wood. This theme is all about soft natural feminine looking décor with soft pastel colours so you can easily match it with pastel cakes, pops, cupcakes and pearlescent or oversized transparent balloons containing confetti. Beautiful macaroons, fresh sandwiches and homemade lemonade in rustic jars match this theme perfectly.

Lolly bags: Crafty gifts incorporating paper and wood, flower stationary and matching pastel lollies.

Location: Outdoors! Think parks, marquees and wooden picnic tables.

Activities: Set up some outdoor games such as a ring toss, wooden ten pin bowling or Finska.

Wow Factor: Dress the table with a beautiful centrepiece such as a Zara&Peach floral letter for the birthday girl and hang some matching flowers around the table.

Ice Cream themed parties are fun and best of all they’re easy. You can have an actual ice cream cake or Ice cream inspired cake, ice cream marshmallow lollies, ice cream themed cake pops and cupcakes, fairy bread and ice cream shaped cookies.

Lolly bags: Ice cream erasers, pencils, ice cream lollies. You can easily craft some ice cream lolly bags by wrapping some cardboard to look like a waffle cone and placing some cotton candy on top. Hide the lollies in the cone and wrap the cotton candy with some clear cellophane (see photo below).

Location: This is definitely a summer theme so it would be a wonderful idea to host outside in the fresh air.

Activities: Colour in ice cream cones, crafting ice cream necklaces or earrings.

Wow Factor: Add some wow factor by hiring a soft serve machine! You could even organise a “dress your own” ice cream topping-stand complete with lollies, sherbets and candy floss.

Under the sea – Mermaid theme. Mermaids are another huge hit at the moment. This theme is so much fun to decorate, think blue and white (water) streamers, jellyfish made from pom poms and streamers, colourful balloons, shells, star fish and sequined mermaid tails! Make some mermaid jelly using blue jelly and fishy lollies. Good cake makers could have a field day with this theme, match the colour of the cake to your theme or serve fun mermaid cupcakes instead.

Lolly bags: Beach toys! Spades, Clam shell cookies, fish lollies. Make some mermaid tail loot bags! (See photo below)

Location: Unless you want to incorporate a pool party this theme is great when hosted indoors.

Activities: Pin the tail on the mermaid, decorate mermaid cupcakes, mermaid face painting.

Wow Factor: Host an “under the sea” photo backdrop. Buy or make some props such as snorkels, fish, shells and seahorses. Backdrops can be made quite easily using streamers and balloons.

Fairy themes are an oldie but a goodie. Little girls love some magic and a magical fairy party is so much fun.  This theme is very visual and a definite classic so it’s easy to find matching décor items. Think grass, toadstools, flowers, fairy wings, butterflies and wands.  The food can be magical; fairy wand pops, fairy bread, enchanted cupcakes and “fairy fizz” soda.

Lolly bags: Bubbles, fairy wands, fairy wings, fairy dust and magical lollies.

Location: This is another good theme to host outside as it suits a garden party however it can be hosted inside in the cooler months also.

Activities: Paint a fairy house! All you need is a table, plastic table cover, some wooden fairy houses, some paint and glitter. The kids will LOVE it.

Wow Factor: Hire a fairy entertainer or a fairy face painter. If you’re budget conscious perhaps an aunty or niece can dress up as a fairy for the day.
